Blu-ray Editorial Review
**** The Blu-ray release of Wagner's "Ring des Nibelungen," conducted by Pierre Boulez, is a commendable upgrade from its DVD predecessor. While the original production dates back to the 1980s, the enhancements in both audio and video quality on Blu-ray deserve recognition. Reviewers noted a noticeable improvement in video quality, despite the original format being 4x3 and somewhat dated. The Blu-ray offers a more fluid and natural motion, resulting in a more lifelike portrayal of the singers, aligning with Patrice Chéreau’s vision that emphasizes acting as an integral part of the performance. Audio has been a major highlight, with many reviewers expressing that the Blu-ray version outshines the DVD significantly. The improved soundstage and dynamic range make for a much richer listening experience, reflecting the production's orchestral nuances more faithfully than the compressed audio of the DVD. The Blu-ray also includes historical context and insights through the restoration of previous introductions and additional features, enhancing the overall value of the viewing experience. The packaging received some critique for being Boulez-centric, moving away from Chéreau’s focus, but it still includes essential elements like extended menus, making navigation easier. Overall, this Blu-ray iteration is deemed indispensable for both new viewers and seasoned fans of the production, marking it as a valuable addition to any opera enthusiast's collection. **
